Good listening skills are a incredibly powerful tool to boost your team\u2019s engagement, performance, and trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is true listening?<br><\/strong>Listening isn\u2019t just about hearing the words. It\u2019s an active effort to fully understand the other person\u2019s thoughts, feelings, intentions, and context. If your phone is buzzing, your messenger is popping up, and your head is full of to-do lists, you are sending a clear message to your team: \u201cI am not focusing on you.\u201d<br>You can show you are fully present by doing these things<br>\u2022 Close your laptop screen before the 1-on-1 starts.<br>\u2022 Don\u2019t touch your phone or let your eyes wander.<br>\u2022 Make eye contact and say, \u201cPlease, keep going.\u201d<br>\"Presence\" means being completely focused on the person in front of you right now. It doesn\u2019t just mean physically \u2018being in the room\u2019; it means your mind and attention are fully directed at them. In leadership and coaching, presence is the most important starting point for listening. When a leader shows true presence in a 1-on-1, the team member immediately feels, \u201cI am being respected.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Stop Judging and Understand First (Non-judgment)<br><\/strong>Listening is not the time to judge what is \u2018right\u2019 or \u2018wrong\u2019. You need to put your judgments aside for a moment so your team member can comfortably open up. Show curiosity and try asking questions like these:<br>\u2022 \u201cWhat made you choose that option in that situation?\u201d<br>\u2022 \u201cWhat were you worried about at that moment?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Listen to Their Emotions (Listening for Emotion)<br><\/strong>A leader needs to hear the emotions behind the words. The moment a person feels their emotions are understood and validated, they start sharing on a deeper level. Try acknowledging their feelings like this<br>\u2022 \u201cIt sounds like you felt a lot of pressure.\u201d<br>\u2022 \u201cDid you feel a bit frustrated at that time?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Organize Their Thoughts for Them (Reflecting &amp; Summarizing)<br><\/strong>Summarizing and reflecting back is a powerful way to say, \u201cI hear you perfectly.\u201d It also helps the team member organize their own thoughts more clearly. Instead, they make their team members feel this way:<br>\u201cTalking to this person makes me feel at ease, and helps me see which way I should go.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next time you talk with your team members, try listening to their emotions and reflecting their words back to them.
