One of the core keys to making this time more meaningful is Empathy. Many leaders say, \u201cI try to listen well, but why don\u2019t my team members feel heard?\u201d or \u201cEmpathy is harder than I thought.\u201d So, how should a leader express empathy during a 1:1 to build trust?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is Empathy?<br><\/strong>Empathy is not about simply agreeing with everything or feeling exactly the same way. It is the attitude of understanding what the other person is feeling and acknowledging that those feelings are valid. When there is empathy, team members feel, \u201cThis is a safe space.\u201d This sense of psychological safety makes conversations deeper and more productive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Empathy can be divided into Cognitive Empathy and Emotional Empathy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Cognitive Empathy<br><\/strong>\"I understand why you felt that way.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cognitive empathy is an effort to understand a situation from the team member's perspective. Instead of feeling the emotion yourself, you understand the logic: \u201cThere is a reason for them to feel this way.\u201d<br>Example: If a team member says, \u201cI\u2019ve been very stressed lately because of the project schedule,\u201d a leader can respond <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith that schedule, the pressure must have been huge. What part was the hardest for you?\u201d<br>\u201cIt\u2019s completely understandable that you felt stressed in that situation.\u201d<br>Don\u2019t rush to fix the problem. Emotional Empathy<br><\/strong>\"I can feel what you are going through.\" Emotional empathy is sharing the emotion with the other person. Your sincerity is delivered through your tone of voice, facial expressions, and calmness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Example: If a team member says, \u201cI felt so upset when the report I worked so hard on was rejected immediately,\u201d a leader can respond <br>\u201cHearing that makes me feel bad too.
